“Himmel und Ähd”, which is Rhineland dialect for “Heaven and earth”, is the name of a popular type of local brewhouse food consisting of mashed potatoes, apple sauce, fried black pudding and onions.

According to history, the name is derived from the origin of the ingredients. Potatoes, also known as earth apples in German, are known to grow in the "Ähd” (Earth), while the apples ripen on trees, i.e. in “heaven”. In Düsseldorf, “Himmel und Ähd” is also a physical place. The Brauerei Füchschen named its restaurant on the Pempelforter Nordstrasse after this hearty food. Here, in addition to the Altbier, home-style food is served - completely down-to-earth. And also the heavens are near: In the colder times of the year you can sit comfortably in the winter garden and in the summer outside on the terrace.
