Historische Altstadt Lügde

The Easter wheel town of Lügde in the south-east of Lippe is known for its historic town center with its beautifully restored farmhouses, the medieval ramparts and the two preserved fortified towers.

The town of Easter bikes. The traditional Easter wheel race is omnipresent in the tranquil little town on the banks of the Emmer. As soon as the burning oak wheels roll into the valley on the evening of Easter Sunday, this unique tradition attracts numerous visitors from near and far. But the Easter wheel race is by no means everything Lügde has to offer 

Lügde is known for its historic town center with its beautifully restored farmhouses, medieval ramparts and two preserved fortified towers. One of the oldest houses in Lügde is home to the local history museum.

The town was founded around 1245. Documents granting the town privileges are no longer preserved. However, it is certain that the town was laid out according to the so-called "Lippische Drei-Straßenmodell", which means that Lippe law was chosen for the founding of the town (such as the town law of Lippstadt and Lemgo, perhaps in a slightly modified form). This special feature can be clearly seen in the town model near the former Franciscan monastery.

Lügde was also laid out according to plan as a "fortress town", it was the fortified center for the territorial policy of the Counts of Pyrmont until 1668.

And it has been preserved almost in its basic outline - despite several major fires. The old town is characterized by the early classicist half-timbered town houses with their typical hall-like Deelen and the half-timbered houses in the old town.

The town is one of the most cohesive agricultural towns in our country and is therefore also a member of the "Historic Town Centres in East Westphalia/Lippe" association.
