The colliery in Dortmund, formerly called the "Castle of Work", impresses with a façade that is in no way inferior to the homes of many aristocrats. The lovingly designed museum is also worth a visit!

This is how the most beautiful colliery in the Ruhr Area was built

Built around 1900, Zollern Colliery was to be regarded from the outset as a model colliery in the Ruhr Area, symbolising prosperity and progress. Fortunately for us, it survived the Second World War relatively unscathed, so you can still enjoy the great view from the winding tower. Some parts of the shaft are still in their original condition.

What is hidden behind the pretty brick façade today?

While hard coal was mined here in the past, the LWL Industrial museum Zollern Colliery today impressively tells you the stories of the men and women who spent years working hard in the colliery underground. The presentation of the social and cultural history of mining in the Ruhr Area shows exemplary biographies of the workers and authentic exhibits: A visit to the museum quickly turns into a short journey into the time of coal dust and industrial culture. On the museum grounds you will also find a great playground and the restaurant "Pferdestall", where regional delicacies such as Westfalenburger, Panhas and Dortmunder Krüstchen are served.
