Fortress/Castle

Haus Langen is located north of Telgte in the immediate vicinity of the rivers Bever and Ems. The ring fortress was built before the year 1000 and is thus one of the oldest earth fortresses where water served as protection. The once-fortified complex owes its name to the knightly dynasty of the von Langens, who inhabited the former refuge for a time. On a cycle tour along the Ems, a detour to Haus Langen is a must.

Tour information
  • Haus Langen is privately owned. There is only visual contact with the building.
  • An exterior tour of the historic double mill is possible at any time.
History information

Haus Langen was probably built before the year 1000 as a circular rampart with two or sometimes three moats to protect it from enemies. Initially, the complex served as a refuge for all the inhabitants of the surrounding farming communities, until it passed from general ownership to the Lords of Langen in the 12th century. In 1378, the castle became the property of the Lords of Lethmathe by marriage, who resided on the estate for over 300 years.

Today Haus Langen is owned by Baron von Elverfeldt. Only the gatehouse, a typical Münster brick gable house, and a coat of arms of the Lethmathe family still exist from the old castle complex. There has probably been a mill on the estate since the 13th century. Today's double mill, however, dates from 1813 and was still in operation until 1950.
