Visible from afar, perched high on a rocky spur above the Sieg, is the medieval castle complex of Blankenberg. A trip to Blankenberg is like a journey back in time. Ruins and gate towers bear witness to the splendour of bygone days. The Counts of Sayn chose an excellent spot to build their castle (1150-1180). The fortification on the unwooded "blank" mountain put the lords of the castle in a position to control the entrances to the Siegtal, the Bergisches Land, the Westerwald and the Siebengebirge.
