The first church was built on this site as early as 1260. It was completely destroyed by fire and looting in 1424. The host remained intact in the ruins. This made Hillentrup a place of pilgrimage because it was regarded as a miracle. It was rebuilt in 1431 as a small, late medieval church. In 1899, the small church was demolished and a larger neo-Gothic hall church was built. The Lippe Pilgrims' Way leads past the Hillentrup church;
