Public buildings – various nature experiences - various

The lock was built in the 17th century in the Issel lowlands to regulate the water supply for the Wesel fortress.

In the early 17th century, the Spaniards continued to expand the town of Wesel as a fortress. They used the so-called Issel ditch to channel water into the city moats with the help of this lock. The name of the lock goes back to the word “bear” in the old meaning of “barrier”. Thanks to restoration work, the lock is still operational.

Today, the Hohe Mark hiking trail leads directly past the Bärenschleuse cultural monument and can thus be experienced by hikers.
