The Language of the Erft
A river has its own unique language. In some places, its water softly murmurs and gurgles, sometimes it rushes loudly and wildly, and at times it flows calmly and slowly, barely audible...

What does the source of the Erft sound like? What does the river tell you?

330 million years ago, the Eifel was a tropical sea. Over time, coral reefs transformed into limestone in the ground. These water-permeable limestone layers were later folded into the Frohngau Limestone Basin and surrounded by impermeable rock layers. Only here, in Holzmülheim, does the water-permeable limestone layer reach the earth's surface. This allows the water of the Erft spring to carve its way upwards. In earlier times, the spring water was used as drinking water for both people and cattle. Together with the Kuhbach, the Erft begins its 103-kilometer journey to the mouth of the Rhine in Neuss from here. During Roman times, it was even navigable. During the flood disaster of 2021, the spring facilities were completely destroyed. Renovation and redesign took place in 2024.
