Through the historic old town of Bad Münstereifel, the Erft flows in its bricked riverbed. The controlled river contributed to the city's prosperity. In the Middle Ages, it supplied water to the wool weaving, tanning, and brewing industries. In the 17th century, the turbines of the cloth factory operated with the water power of the Erft. The city rose to become a central trading hub. However, the river could not be completely tamed. There were repeated devastating floods. The flood disaster of 2021 was preceded by "century floods" in 1416, 1788, 1818, and 1955, each with destructive power. The traces of the 2021 flood are still visible today. On the memorial staircase to the Erft, motifs of the flood and reconstruction commemorate the event.
