Circular trail, start/finish: Dorf- und Brunnenplatz, Hauptstraße, 54584 Gönnersdorf, length: 3.6 km, duration: 1 hour

The short circular trail combines wide views with ancient stones: the Gönnersdorfer Leyen are remains from the Middle Devonian, around 380 million years old.

The circular trail starts at the village and fountain square, which is also the starting point for the educational trail on the history of the village and its landscape.

In the pavilion on the square, you can find interesting information about the village ecology on descriptive boards. The trail leads over the road on the Giesenberg to the top of the hill. From there you have wonderful panoramic views over the Kyll valley, the Mäuerchenberg, Hierneberg and Pinnert nature reserves with their juniper bushes. The route continues along forest and meadow paths to the Gönnersdorfer Leyen. A remnant from the past. The limestone rocks were formed around 380 million years ago, in the Middle Devonian period, in a warm shallow sea. The limestone later became the harder dolomite. Erosion and erosion by the adjacent Kyll river left the weather-resistant dolomite rocks of the "Leyen". Today, the mighty chain of dolomite rocks is around 200 meters long and up to 25 meters high.

The entire route is signposted: Hiking in and around Gönnnersdorf; red arrow.

From the starting point at the village square, we keep left towards the old chapel and then turn right into the road to Giesenberg. (The road markings on the Giesenberg signpost are incorrect). Continue uphill to the next crossroads and then turn left. From here you can already see far-reaching views over Gönnersdorf, the Kyll valley and the Vulkaneifel. After a few metres, there is a bench on the left-hand side where you can relax. Later, the path turns left and leads over the K54 to the right to the Möschelberg nature reserve. We follow the signposts and finally reach the barbecue hut after a short climb.  Behind the hut, a small path leads to the right towards the Leyen. Below the rocks, the path meanders downhill to the Kyll cycle path. We follow this to the left and come back to Gönnersdorf. At the main road, we turn left back to the village square.

  • Hiking in the Eifel is great fun if you are well prepared.
  • Carry a rucksack with drinks, provisions and a mobile phone.
  • For your own safety, please always stay on the signposted paths.
  • Take care. In autumn, pay particular attention to fallen leaves that cover uneven areas on the path. There is also a risk of slipping in damp and wet weather!

Sturdy shoes and appropriate clothing for the season.

The Hippelsteinchen is well worth seeing. Several blocks of dolomite are stacked on top of each other so that the rock formation resembles a mushroom.

Please use the navigable start address in the parking area to enter it into your navigation device.

Parking is available at the starting point of the hike, Hauptstraße (village square).
