Main route

The Hohe Mark cycle route is a total of 280 kilometres long and leads through the most beautiful natural areas between the Rhine and the Dortmund-Ems Canal. Diverse habitats, historic towns and all kinds of "wildlife" can be marvelled at from the saddle. A rich palette of colours between forests, lakes, rivers, meadows and fields awaits the cyclist. Expansive views and new encounters with wildlife are guaranteed.

We recommend dividing the route into ten stages, which can be individually adapted to suit your stamina and mood. As the Hohe Mark CycleRoute is a circular route, the starting point can be freely chosen. The Hohe Mark CycleRoute offers pure variety!

Hohe Mark Nature Park Cycle Route

icon-info Details

The Hohe Mark Nature Park CycleRoute leads along an approx. 280 km long circular route through the western and southern Münsterland.

It is possible to start in all towns. The starting point here is Pröbstingsee. The cycle tour first leads to Borken with the Sternbusch at Gemen Castle and the Apothecary's Garden. The next stop is the historic zoo at Velen Castle with its old trees.

The Black Fens and the Heubach meadows are typical of the idyllic landscape of the region. The wild horses in the Merfelder Bruch are another special highlight awaiting cyclists. From Dülmen, the route continues to Haltern am See with its beautiful lakeside paths along the deep blue reservoirs. The next stage destination, Olfen, invites you to discover the magnificent Stever floodplains. The landscape is best explored by raft.

In Datteln, at the transition to the Ruhr region, the Wesel-Datteln Canal becomes your companion. With almost no incline, the cycle path leads back over the Lippe to Haltern am See with its beautiful market square. The beautiful cycle path continues westwards and touches the Lippe again and again before reaching the lively town centre of Dorsten.

The Wesel-Dateln Canal remains in view for the next few kilometres before the path turns north at Schermbeck and leads through the gentle countryside to Raesfeld. In addition to the Femeiche, one of the oldest trees in Germany, the romantic castle and the historic zoo are particularly worth seeing.

The route continues through picturesque Marienthal and Dingdener Heide to Isselburg. The Anholt Switzerland and Anholt moated castle are two particularly beautiful sights within sight of the Dutch border.

The Hohe Mark cycle route turns eastwards in an arc along the green border and reaches Bocholt, the largest town along the route. The market square, the textile museum and the Aasee lake are well worth a visit.

The last stage leads from Bocholt to the charming little town of Rhede with its imposing church. The Bulo-Vardingholter Venn offers another marvellous landscape before the cycle tour returns to its starting point at Pröbstingsee.

We recommend travelling to the Hohe Mark Cycle Route by train. Numerous railway stations are located in the immediate vicinity of the cycle tour and offer connections to the Ruhr region, the Rhineland and the Lower Rhine or to the Osnabrück region. Good starting points are the railway stations in Bocholt, Borken, Dorsten, Reken, Haltern am See and Dülmen.

If you are travelling by car, take the A3 (Oberhausen-Arnheim), A31 (Oberhausen-Emden), A43 (Recklinghausen-Münster) or A52 (Gladbeck-Haltern am See) motorways.

There are numerous car parks along the cycle route.

The Hohe Mark RadRoute is signposted throughout.

It is part of the junction system and can be recognised by the red/white signs. At intersections, arrow or destination signs guide cyclists in the right direction. Here cyclists will also find the Hohe Mark RadRoute logo with the green bicycle. Where the cycle paths only lead in one direction, there are regular rectangular intermediate signposts.

The Hohe Mark RadRoute makes it possible to take shortcuts via transverse bridges at four points - between Borken and Raesfeld and between Reken via Heiden and Dorsten. These are also part of the east, centre and west courses. The familiar route logo in reverse colour scheme (white bicycle on a green background) also guides you on the cross-paths.
