Messina, Italy, somewhere between today, tomorrow and then. The country gentleman Leonato welcomes the brothers Don Pedro and Don John, who are on their way home from a campaign with their entourage, and asks them to stay. Beatrice, Lenato's niece, is not happy about this. She and Benedikt, one of Don Pedro's comrades-in-arms, can't stand each other and are constantly fighting, while Bendick's friend Claudio is completely smitten by Hero, Leonato's daughter. It's love at first sight for both of them. A wedding is immediately planned.
A happy ending seems to be within reach, but the shadow of a perfidious intrigue lies over the tenderly forged bonds.
