A change of ownership becomes the talk of the town: When Christa and Josef Schnitzler took over Uerige, founded in 1862, in 1976, the new head of the traditional brewery was the talk of Düsseldorf. After all, the graduate master brewer Schnitzler had previously been regarded as the crown prince of the “Schumacher” brewery. Today, tourists come not only for the beer, but also because a popular TV series was filmed there.
Today, son Michael runs the business - and does so in an extremely transparent manner: a guided tour of the “Gläserne Brauerei” gives visitors the opportunity to see all the main brewing processes at the headquarters on Berger Straße. And for those who want to have a shot after the Alt: Uerige now also distils schnapps and single malt. The brewery was also the filming location for the comedy drama series “Auf Wiedersehen, Pet” from the 1980s. In the series, seven tradesmen end up on a building site and spend a lot of time in the old town, especially in the Uerige. No wonder tourists still make the pilgrimage there to see the original location.
