Historic site historical building

The "Marschiertor" gate in Aachen is one of the most imposing surviving city gates.

The former border gate to Burtscheid was a part of the city wall in the 13th century, and was mainly used to store weapons. Together with ten other city gates and a wall ring, the Marschiertor gate meant that the city could be well defended. Today, the building is the headquarters of the Stadtgarde Oecher Penn city guards, who also donated the sculpture by Klaus Gehlen symbolising the former gatekeepers, the “Penn soldiers”. During the evening, it's worth taking a walk around the building, which is bathed in a warm light after sunset.
