The relief of Mundolph and Gundolph is a reminder of the origin of the “Klappergasse” street name.
It shows two deceased bishops from Maastricht called Mundolph and Gundolph. According to the legend, after their death, they made their way to Aachen to take part in the consecration ceremony of today’s Aachen Cathedral. Since the clattering of their ribs could already be heard from far away, the street where they arrived in Aachen is called “Klappergasse”, or “clatter street”.
