The Fischweiberbrunnen (Fishwives' Fountain) is located in the heart of the old town, in front of the historic colourful houses. It was designed by Rainer Walk in 1986 for the 100th anniversary of the district craftsmen's association. It is a reminder of the fish market that used to be located here and was first mentioned in the 12th century. At that time, Cologne was an important centre for the fish trade and, with the Stapelhaus, also offered the possibility of preserving and storing fish.
