The history of the windmill in Hartum
A rampart mill has stood on the western outskirts of Hartum since 1877. The mighty tower of the mill is made of Bergkirchen sandstone. The former earth wall was later replaced by a brick first floor made of the same sandstone.
The beginnings of the mill
A trestle windmill stood on the site as early as 1564. After the old mill fell into disrepair, the new windmill was built in 1877. There is a plaque in the tower with the following inscription next to the name of the builder and the local councillors:
"God's mills grind slowly, but grind excellently fine, what he misses with patience, he catches up with sharpness."
Technical developments
The windmill was turned into the wind using a gaff wheel and pull rope, but was replaced by a wind rose as early as 1896. In 1913, an electric motor was installed as an additional drive.
The decline of the business
After a blade broke off during a stormy night in 1942, the entire escape was dismantled and the mill was only milled using motor power until 1967, when operations were discontinued.
