Alte Waage Brakel

Stone house with Gothic stepped gable. Built by the Knights of Modexen around 1350.

Today, the "Alte Waage" houses the council chamber, the town archives and the municipal exhibition room, which is mainly used for current temporary exhibitions of the Brakel Town Museum.

According to tradition, this building with its Gothic stone gable was erected around 1350 as the town seat of the Knights of Modexen.

The settlement of Modexen was abandoned by all its inhabitants in the second half of the 14th century. This development is the reason for the relocation of the knights of Modexen to Brakel. Alongside the old town castle of the noblemen of Brakel (Am Thy), this building is the last knight's seat to be erected in the town. In 1479, the Alte Waage is pledged to the town and becomes its property in 1553. The town weigh house was located here until 1840. The individual storeys serve as a grain store for the natural tax. In 1868, the building was renovated and the two upper floors were converted into flats. The ground floor is used as a fire station. After extensive remodelling and renovation work, the council meeting room on the first floor, the town archives on the first floor and the exhibition rooms on the ground floor and in the vaulted cellar are set up in 1980.
