Gütersloh's large inner city church or "New Church", as it was initially called, was completed in 1861 according to plans by the Barmen master builder Christian Heyden. Built in the neo-Gothic style, the hall church served as a place of worship for the Protestant community in the growing town and, together with the town hall opposite, also built by Heyden, marked the "new town center". The church is home to a unique tradition that can be traced back to around 1790 in Gütersloh: the night chimes. From Reformation Day (October 31) to Candlemas on February 2, a carpet of church bells spreads across the city in almost meditative harmony every Saturday evening and before every public holiday. There are several theories about its historical origins, but its effect is undisputed - as is the recognition that the "bell ringers" Marcus Bütteröwe and Dr. Barbara Rohden deserve for maintaining this tradition.
