Vantage point/Observation tower Fortress/Castle Historic site

Vlotho Castle on the Amtshausberg is located in the middle of the beautiful Weser landscape and is a popular excursion destination. The castle wall of the beer garden offers a magnificent view over the Weser valley.

The hilltop castle was built around 1250 by Heinrich von Oldenburg on the Deesberg, now the Amtshausberg. It was used to control the Weser and the trade routes that converged in Vlotho.

Around 1567, the castle was the seat of the Drosten and the district administration. After that, its importance dwindled as defense technology changed. In 1709, the castle was cleared for demolition.

The preserved foundation walls and other remains, such as the dungeon and fountain of the once magnificent building, are still a reminder of times gone by.
