Archaeological site

The Herlingsburg - a rampart complex at an altitude of 334 m on the Keuperberg.

Herlingsburg Castle, formerly known as Skidrioburg or Hermannsburg, is not a typical medieval stone castle. This castle, located around three kilometers west of Lügde's old town, dates back to the pre-Roman Iron Age and is a characteristic rampart complex with a ring-shaped main rampart and several ramparts. Stony material was heaped up for the ramparts and enclosed with palisades on the inner and outer sides. The rampart castle on the plateau of the 345-metre-high Keuperberg is home to graves from various eras and other mysterious fortifications.

The enormous cultural and historical significance of the ground monument is undisputed. As excavations have shown, the site was used by the people of the region as a meeting place, place of worship and as a refuge for more than 1,000 years. There was even a well on the hilltop that supplied them with water. There is no other fortification in East Westphalia that was so consistently adapted to the terrain and was therefore ideal for defensive purposes.
