Senner Pferde im Wildweideprojekt mit Selfie-Point SHS

If you're lucky, you can spot a very special animal near the Ems springs. This is the location of the Senner Horses Wildlife Project, which is also indicated by information boards.

The Senner horses are one of the oldest German horse breeds. The Senne Biostation (www.bs-paderborn-senne.de) has set itself the task of preserving this old breed - and at the same time maintaining the landscape of the Senne with them.

The Senner, as they are known for short, are more similar to the well-known domestic breeds of horses than wild horses, they are relatively large and above all elegant. In addition, different colors are quite common, but the horses in the Moosheide all belong to the same breed.

Wild horses in the Senne heathland were first mentioned in documents in 1160. In the Middle Ages, dairymen were considered a coveted cultural breed. When the population of wild horses was recorded in 1493, there were 64 individuals, including 23 broodmares and 18 foals, which indicates good fertility even back then. The stud building, which had existed since the 16th century and was located near the princely Lopshorn hunting lodge in the Senne, was used for breeding and stock monitoring. A game stud farm existed until the early 20th century. From the end of the 17th century, Arabian thoroughbreds were crossed in, followed by English thoroughbreds and Anglo-Arabs at the end of the 18th century, which still define the type of the Senner breed today.

From April/May to October, there is a herd on the wild pasture project at the source of the Ems in the Moosheide. Combine a visit to the horses with a trip to the Emsquelle spring and the Ems Adventure World.
