Nienburg an der Else

Old watermill, swirling fish pass and renaturalized stream

The location of the Nienburg mill has been documented for over 700 years. At the beginning of the 15th century, the Else was most likely dug, probably primarily to surround the new Nienburg with a moat. This is also when the Nienburg mill was built at its present location. It was a double mill, i.e. the buildings were erected on both sides of the watercourse. The grain mill stood on the left bank, while the engine house with an oil mill (for grinding oilseeds) and a saw stood on the right.

The mill has only been closed since 1986 and is considered a technical monument. The "moated castle of Nienburg" was sold 100 years ago, the land divided up and the buildings almost completely demolished. Sandstone from the manor house is said to have been used for railroad construction. Only a half-timbered building near the Nienburg mill remains as a reminder of the old castle in the Elsen lowlands.
