Red brick building from 1896 modeled on Hanseatic warehouses

The Bünder tobacco warehouse was built in 1896 by the architect Heinrich Hutze from Barkhausen, following the example of Hanseatic warehouses. While the outer walls are made of red brick, the individual floors are made entirely of wood to meet the requirements of tobacco storage. The client was the cigar factory Leopold Engelhardt & Biermann, founded in Verden an der Aller in 1857 and headquartered in Bremen, which had several branches in Westphalia. From 1867, this also included Bünde on the site of today's central bus station. While the factory buildings - which had already been used by a number of other companies since its closure in 1930 - were demolished in 1976, the warehouse was acquired by the town in 1973 and has been a listed building since 1986. Since its extensive renovation, the tobacco warehouse has been a landmark of the city and is still used in parallel by the cigar industry today.
