Extensive, branched out system of ponds, which extends northwest from Stift Quernheim to Mennighüffen in the southeast
The watercourse system of the Rehmerloh-Mennighüffer-Mühlenbach runs through the Quernheimer Hügelland with a length of approx. 11 km and has the largest catchment area of a watercourse in the district of Herford with 71 square kilometers. Due to the large number of its tributaries and the varied terrain of its catchment area, the Mühlenbach has a rich mosaic of habitats. For long stretches, it is accompanied by stream alder-ash forest and flows through grassland areas and tall herbaceous meadows as well as arable land. The shade provided by the wooded fringe ensures a water temperature of 10 to 12°C all year round. The streams meander, they have steep drop-off edges (nesting sites for kingfishers) and gravel and sand banks (spawning grounds for fish). 18 species of fish have been recorded, including hazel, chub, brook loach, bleak and nine-spined stickleback. The valley of the Rehmerloh-Mennighüffer-Mühlenbach stream has been designated a nature reserve and is home to many Red List species such as the water shrew, bats, tree falcon, kingfisher and the aurora butterfly.
