The architecturally impressive Jahrhunderthalle Bochum is the focal point for events of all kinds.

Jahrhunderthalle Bochum – experience industrial culture and entertainment between modernity and tradition

A particularly successful example of structural change and the transformation of industrial culture into cultural industry can be found in the Bochum district of Stahlhausen: The Jahrhunderthalle Bochum is not only an architectural landmark of the city, but also an anchor point for cultural events in the Ruhr Area. Here you can experience concerts, shows, theatre and installations in an exciting ambience between modernity and tradition. The Jahrhunderthalle Bochum also hosts the Ruhrtriennale, the most important cultural festival in the region.

A building in motion

The Jahrhunderthalle Bochum was originally built in 1902 for the Düsseldorf trade exhibition; the Bochumer Verein für Bergbau und Gussstahlfabrikation was the client. The flexible steel construction made it possible to rebuild it as a gas power station in Bochum. The Jahrhunderthalle is thus an example of a purpose-built industrial building, which was built according to the specifications of engineering technology, not according to architectural plans. Also remarkable: At that time, the construction was put into operation via industrial buildings.

Culture conquers industry

It was the cabaret scene that discovered the potential of the industrial complex as a venue, after the decline of the coal and steel industry, the building complex was used as a warehouse for a long time. In 2003, the building complex was revitalised, renovated and fitted with a modern glazed front. No matter which genre you prefer: Rock, pop, jazz and classical concerts take place in the also popular venue, in addition to theatre productions, awards ceremonies, such as the 1LIVE Krone, and trade fairs.

Green space and local recreation

When visiting the Jahrhunderthalle Bochum you should not miss the adjacent Westpark, which was designed for the International Building Exhibition Emscher Park. An industrial wasteland has become a recreational area where you can hike - and take your bike tours through radrevier.ruhr.
