The ship canal lift Henrichenburg is a must-see for all fans of inland shipping.
LWL-Industriemuseum Schifffshebewerk - Ein Herz für Binnenschifffahrtskapitäne
Not only for the technology fans among you is the Henrichenburg ship lift in Waltrop a must. Also for all of you whose heart beats for inland navigation! The ship lift near Waltrop, the "lift for ships", already has a few years under its belt. It was opened in 1899 by the Prussian King Wilhelm II and was a real prestige object. Lifting a loaded ship weighing several tonnes over 14 metres was a really strong achievement back then! Today, in addition to the great view of the Dortmund-Ems Canal from the ship's hoist, the museum also takes you on a journey through the history of the structure and the people who lived along the canal.
A masterpiece - not only for technology fans
The ship's hoist was not only a technical representative object, but thanks to its special stone look it is also an eye-catcher, both in the past and today. In the historic machine hall, you can learn all about the building's origins and its special technology. Other attractions include a historic shipyard, steamships and floating equipment in the outer harbour. On board the cargo ship Franz-Christian, an exhibition will give you an insight into the life of the bargemen and their families. As an anchor point on the Industrial Culture Route, the Henrichenburg Ship's Hoist is one of the most important industrial monuments in the Ruhr region.
Elixir of life, object of longing and musical motif
The theme of water is also reflected in other events in and around the ship's hoist. Special exhibitions on various themes, concerts, tastings, workshops and lectures fill the industrial monument with life all year round. Guided tours also take place regularly. In addition, the passenger ship "Henrichenburg" goes on long canal trips at the museum quay several times. Group tours for children, adults, school classes or people with disabilities complete the portfolio.
