Visitor Center Hoheward

The RVR Visitor centre Hoheward is located at the foot of the Hoheward heap, on the site of the historic Ewald colliery, where industrial culture and landscape experience are combined par excellence. The Hoheward Landscape Park was created - Europes largest heap landscape from hard coal mining, in the heart of the Ruhr Metropolis.

As a tourist information centre, the RVR Visitor centre Hoheward has a variety of information and adventure tours ready for its guests. Local and regional information about the Hoheward heap, the industrial heritage route and other tourist offers are bundled here.
 
Offers that can be booked include tours and guided tours by SEGWAY, pedelec (e-bike), by coach, by bicycle or on foot. Whether heap tours, colliery expeditions, heap ramps or the interactive permanent exhibition NEW HORIZONS in the wage and light hall of the Ewald colliery, active infotainment is guaranteed.
 
The nearby Hoheward heap is not only the largest but also the most diverse heap in the region. Emerging from the depths of mining, the imposing green massive into the sky of the northern Ruhr area. 151 meters above sea level, 110 meters above ground level, a whopping 170 hectares in area. In addition, the 70 meter high sister heap Hoppenbruch is directly adjacent and is a wooded oasis for walkers and mountain bikers. Together, the heap landscape forms a 220 hectare mountain backdrop at the gates of the surrounding cities of Herten, Recklinghausen, Gelsenkirchen and Herne.

In addition to its sheer size, the Hoheward spoil tip has another unique selling point: the horizon astronomy. Two summit plateaus form the astronomical park, consisting of a steel horizon observatory and a horizontal sundial. In this way, ancient methods of determining time can be experienced and create an experience space for astronomical nature.
