An urban jewel is the Margarethenhöhe, considered one of the finest examples of the German garden city idea.
The idyllic district was donated by Margarethe Krupp in 1906 on the occasion of her daughter Bertha's wedding. According to plans by the architect Georg Metzendorf, comfortably furnished flats were built in houses with a maximum of three storeys.
Although the settlement presents an image of unity, hardly any two houses are alike. Varying design elements such as oriels and arcades, curved gables, pilasters and natural stone plinths give each house its own face. The Ruhr Museum is in charge of a model flat on the Margarethenhöhe, furnished according to historical models. Part of the estate was listed in 1987.
