HISTORIC JEWEL: SOLINGEN GRÄFRATH

A Bergisch journey through time

In the old town of Gräfrath, time seems to have stood still. You can still see the small pre-industrial town it once was.

There are around 120 listed buildings in the town centre the whole of which has been declared a historic site. As you stroll through the narrow streets, you’ll be surprised at how lovingly the slate-clad, timber-framed Bergisch houses have been restored.

The cloister church of Saint Mary of the Assumption can be seen in the distance. It is not only the largest, but also the oldest building in the town. Built originally before 1195, it was rebuilt in Baroque style after fires in 1686 and 1717. The German Blade Museum building is also part of the monastery complex. Here you can learn everything about the city of blades’ most famous export.

Tip: You can really relax in this wonderful old town ambiance. There are restaurants and cafés around the romantic market square, ideal for a cosy stop off.
