IDYLLIC TIMBER-FRAMED BUILDINGS IN REMSCHEID LENNEP

The clothmakers’ town through the ages

Explore the winding alleys and idyllic timber-framed buildings in Lennep. The old town is a real gem and one of the oldest towns in the Bergisches Land.

Located on the old road between Cologne and the Baltic Sea, the town received its charter in 1230 and quickly developed into an important trading centre. Today, Lennep is part of Remscheid, but appears to be part of another world. Stroll over the old cobblestones along historic walls through the circular old town. You will find its medieval character hiding in every nook and cranny.

Lennep became famous for its vibrant textile industry. The industrialisation of the textile industry began here. Cloth was produced down in the valley on the river Wupper, while the clothmakers’ homes and trading houses were located in the town.

The clothmakers’ town is also the birthplace of a great inventor. Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen was born in Lennep in 1845. Be sure to include a visit to the German Röntgen Museum in your plans: Here, both young and old can explore and experiment creatively with x-rays.

Tip: Go on a “Search for clues through the clothmakers’ town”. The starting point is the German Röntgen Museum. On this signposted tour, you will discover some exciting facts about the history of weaving in the Bergisches Land. Would you believe that the former cloister church was once used for textile production?
