BRILL QUARTER: STATELY HOMES ON THE HILLSIDE

Stroll through German’s largest Gründerzeit mansion district

Who would have expected it? Today, the Brill Quarter still tells of Wuppertal’s greatness and the heyday of the textile industry. Germany’s largest continuous mansion district from the Gründerzeit was created on the slope of the Kaiserhöhe in what is now the district of Elberfeld. This is where industrial families had renowned architects build their prestigious houses from 1870 onwards. They were constructed here, far away from the industrial companies, in spacious parks with spectacular views. If you come to Wuppertal, you should definitely allow yourself some time to take a walk through this fascinating quarter. There are around 250 listed buildings to marvel at in just this district alone.
A special sight: the mansion district looks particularly attractive at dusk, especially in autumn and in the run-up to Christmas.
