In what is probably Germany's “sharpest” museum, steel plays the leading role and recounts stories of love and war, of noble gifts and ancient customs. Solingen is not only the home of world-famous blades, it is also home to the German Blade Museum.
Here’s what there is to discover in the German Blade Museum
From stone age knives to modern designer cutlery, from Samurai swords and polished daggers to delicate nail scissors – the German Blade Museum in the former Augustinian monastery in Gräfrath showcases sharp steel in all its forms and uses. What was produced in the cottages around Solingen by consummate craftsmen has made the city of blades famous throughout the world.
Exciting stories are told here. The largest collection of cutlery in the world reflects our changing dining culture over the centuries. Shiny goods and cutlery plus paintings, graphics and sculptures are a silent testimony to noble gifts and ancient customs.
Sacred pieces belonging to the cloister church’s treasure are on display in a side wing. High-quality goldsmith work from the Gothic and Baroque periods bears witness to religious life at the former pilgrimage site. Right next door, in the Bergisches Haus, children can go on a journey of discovery. Swords, sabres and daggers can all be touched.
