World-class art collection | Von der Heydt Museum

Want to study a genuine Picasso, Monet or Cézanne in peace? You don’t have to travel to Paris or London for that, a visit to the heart of Wuppertal will do. The Von der Heydt Museum in Wuppertal-Elberfeld enjoys an excellent international reputation. Here you can see masterpieces from five centuries in all their glory.

Art from the 16th century to the present day

Walk through the hallowed halls of the Von der Heydt Museum, founded in 1902, which was originally the old Elberfeld Town Hall. Impressionism, expressionism and the 1920s are the focus of the museum’s collection. Around 2,200 high-profile paintings, 500 sculptures and 30,000 graphic works form the collection which is presented through changing exhibitions. Housing world-famous works by Dutch artists and from the 19th century, paintings by Claude Monet, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Otto Dix, Pablo Picasso and Francis Bacon, the museum is one of Germany’s important, internationally renowned art institutes.

The important position held by the museum is primarily thanks to the people of Wuppertal and their artistic taste and public spiritedness. They donated and contributed high-profile works to the museum on a regular basis. Particularly noteworthy as donors and patrons are the Elberfeld banker August von der Heydt and his son Eduard, after whom the museum is named today.
