Hückeswagen Castle stands in the middle of a mountain spur above the town centre of Hückeswagen. The town's landmark was first mentioned in 1189, but the Counts of Hückeswagen were already mentioned in 1138. In 1260, the County of Hückeswagen was sold to the Counts of Berg and was inhabited until 1800. In the following decades, the castle fell into noticeable disrepair. Hückeswagen Castle only underwent extensive restoration work in the middle of the 19th century after it was taken into private ownership.
The north wing houses the local history museum, which is well worth a visit and showcases 18th and 19th century Berg domestic culture and typical Berg crafts. Medieval history is documented with documents and seals of the great counts and lords of the castle. Various historical films are shown on a modern video wall. The museum is currently closed as it is being renovated over the next few years. However, the videos that are shown there can also be viewed online: YouTube.
In addition to the historic fountain, the castle garden with its historic pavilion has also been preserved.
