Experience and enjoy history brought to life | Balkhauser Kotten

It could not be a more picturesque setting, the typical Bergisch cottage right in the Wupper valley in Solingen-Glüder surrounded by the backdrop of the Wupper mountains. The cottage’s history goes way back. As early as the 14th century, Solingen developed into a blade manufacturing centre. Cottages were built in the stream and river valleys as grinding workshops where grinders worked on rotating stones driven by water.

Symbol of Solingen (city of blades) and attractive destination

Thanks to the family acting as custodians of the cottage, who work here today, grinding and telling stories, the historic monument and the old craft tradition of the Solingen grinders will be authentically preserved for future generations. The trench system, water wheel and the mill’s mechanical equipment can still be seen today. After the cottage was partially destroyed by fire, it was faithfully rebuilt in the original 19th century half-timbered style.

A visit to the cottage

The cottage is a year-round destination for the whole family. Display boards provide guests with information about the work at the cottage or they can sign up for a guided tour. Various events are held here all year round. For information on opening hours and events, visit www.balkhauser-kotten.de
