The imposing Bentheim Castle is enthroned on a magnificent sandstone ridge and is the only hilltop castle in the Münsterland region. Its first mentions can be traced back to the year 1050.History informationThe first mentions of Bentheim Castle and the Counts of Bentheim date back to 1050. In the following years, the castle's history was marked by various armed conflicts. The medieval face of the castle can still be seen in many areas today, including the castle walls built around 1160, the tower of St Catherine's Church and the powder tower. The stone cross "Herrgott von Bentheim" is considered one of the oldest testimonies to Christian life in the region.Tour information

Tours of the castle are also possible without a guided tour. From March to October, the castle can be visited during opening hours. From November to February, the castle can be visited during opening hours on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The castle is closed on 24 and 25 December and 1 January.

Höhenburg Bentheim is located on the northern route of the 100 Castles Route. The 100 Castles Route leads to other impressive castles and palaces in Münsterland. The castle is also connected to the 4500-kilometre network of cycle paths in Münsterland. This offers numerous opportunities for day or multi-day tours through the Münsterland park landscape.

Journey to Bentheim Castle
The Höhenburg in Bad Bentheim is located in the northern Münsterland near the Dutch border.
How to get there by car:
Coming from the east or west: motorway A30
Coming from the north or south: A31 motorway
Arrival by bus and train: Bad Bentheim railway station. The town is also regularly served by IC trains from Berlin and Amsterdam. Bus lines 40 and 60 run from the station to the centre of Bad Bentheim. From here it is only a 5-minute walk to the castle.

A car park is located at the foot of the castle directly at the castle park.
