History information

The archbishops of Cologne built a fortification in Hovestadt to secure the borders. As early as 1152, a Dietrich von Hovestadt was first mentioned in documents with a permanent residence. Hovestadt Castle was explicitly mentioned in documents in 1292. Due to the strategic location of the castle on the river Lippe, it was destroyed and rebuilt several times in the Middle Ages. Between 1563 and 1572, it was Laurenz vom Brachum who built the moated castle in Hovestadt in its present form. The well-known architect Johann Conrad Schlaun designed the baroque outer castle of Hovestadt Castle in his time. The Counts of Plettenberg have owned the castle complex since 1710 and inhabited it since 1733. The castle is still privately owned and cannot be visited. The baroque garden of Hovestadt Castle has been accessible since its restoration in 1997.
