Steinfurt Castle was first mentioned in 1129. The massive fortification was built on an artificially raised mound and has been continuously expanded and rebuilt since the 12th century. The present form of the castle was created in the 16th century. The ring-shaped building is still a striking feature of the castle complex today. It has a gate tower worth seeing, a double chapel from the 12th century and a two-storey oriel from 1559, which is decorated with early Renaissance ornamentation. Today, the castle is still privately owned and inhabited.
