History information

The existence of a castle in Westerwinkel was documented as early as 1225. In the course of time, the estate changed hands several times. With the marriage of Herman von Merveldt and Ursula von Diepenbrock, heiress daughter of Westerwinkel, it came into the possession of the Counts of Merveldt in 1555 - who are still the lords of Westerwinkel today.

The present enclosed, four-winged complex was not built until the middle of the 17th century, with the castle situated in the middle of an English garden. The origins of the moats surrounding the castle lie in the early Baroque style. However, they were no longer dug for defensive purposes, as this system was already considered obsolete at the time, but had as their aim the representation of the Baroque style.

The complex is laid out on two rectangular islands: The buildings are on the eastern island, the garden is on the western island.
