History information

Lüdinghausen Castle was probably built as a knight's seat in the 12th century. Later it was owned by the cathedral capital of Münster for centuries. Between 1569 and 1572, Lüdinghausen Castle was largely rebuilt in the Renaissance style after a fire. The newly restored south wing with chapter house, the so-called mother-and-child wooden ceiling and coat-of-arms paintings date from this period.

Today, the castle houses many original and well-preserved paintings as well as halls with paintings. The chapter house with well-preserved armorial panels and the Renaissance wing of the castle are particularly attractive, and excavations from the Middle Ages can also be visited. In addition, the castle grounds are regularly used as a venue for numerous events.
