Fortress/Castle historical building Tourist attractions – various Museum/Exhibition

Davensberg Castle Tower is the exciting remnant of a former castle complex that was probably built around 1250. First mentioned in a document in 1263, the entire complex was repeatedly extended and rebuilt over the centuries. The large castle tower, which houses a fireplace room on the upper floor, a prison on the ground floor and a gloomy dungeon in the cellar, also dates from this time.

Today, the castle tower houses the lovingly furnished local history museum. Guided tours can be booked by telephone with the Davensberg local history society.

History information

Davensberg Castle Tower is the exciting remnant of a former castle complex in the municipality of Ascheberg.

The castle was first mentioned in documents in the middle of the 13th century as the ancestral seat of the von Meinövel family. Protected by the Emmerbach and the impenetrable woodland of the Davert, a small craftsmen's settlement formed around the castle in the course of the 14th century. Generous alterations around 1500 by the von Büren family can still be seen today in the preserved fortified tower and the parish church of St. Anna. The great names of the Münster art scene of the time - Johann Brabender and Hermann tom Ring - created the church's altar, which is still impressive today.

The three-part division of the fortified tower is still visible, even though its use today is different: upstairs is the chimney room with a preserved star vault and a Gothic fireplace. On the ground floor and in the cellar are the darker witnesses of the time: prison with torture chamber and the dark dungeon. Especially during the time of the witch hunts, these rooms sealed the fates of many women under suspicion. A witch's stick, which is now exhibited in the museum rooms of the local history museum, bears witness to these atrocities.

The complex suffered severe damage during the Thirty Years' War when it was set on fire by Lüneburg troops in 1634. The von Morrien family was by then the sole owner. As they stayed at Nordkirchen Castle, few if any attempts were made to save the Davensberg complex.

Today, the tower with its colourful, typical shutters houses the lovingly furnished local history museum - and a wedding room. The museum and the tower can be visited by appointment. Many events also take place around the tower. The beautiful nature around the former castle site invites you to take a long walk.
