History information

Haus Assen is a historic moated castle in Lippe Valley, located deep in the eastern Münsterland in the midst of unspoilt nature. It tells a very eventful story that is over a thousand years old.

In 1023, Emperor Heinrich II gave the Amtshof Honsel, located on the river Lippe, to Bishop Meinwerk of Paderborn. This also included the house of Assen, which was known at the time as "Borch tor Assen". Within the following 300 years, the ownership changed again and again. With the purchase of the estate in 1396 by Röttger I von Ketteler in fief and the inheritance to his descendants Röttger II and Goswin I von Ketteler, the house began to take shape: In 1455, for example, "Neu-Assen", which was situated to the south, was built with a chapel. In 1564 Cornelia née von Renneberg, the widow of the later Goswin II von Ketteler, had today's Renaissance castle built under the direction of master builder Laurenz von Brachum. About a hundred years later, Haus Assen became the property of the von Galen family, who lived there until 2002. Cardinal Clemens August von Galen (1878-1946) often spent his summer holidays at the country estate in Lippborg. In 1997, Bernhard Graf von Galen donated the estate to the religious community "Servi Jesu et Mariae", which ran a boys' boarding school there for almost 20 years.

Today, Haus Assen is used as a spiritual centre and meeting place for youth and family. Its extensive programme includes retreats, faith courses, family weekends and youth activities such as scout camps and knights' days. Guided tours of the castle are also offered regularly.

Tour information
  • Public tours and events are offered regularly, during which the interior rooms can also be visited. Detailed information is available from the religious community.
  • A tour of the exterior is possible at any time. Numerous footpaths lead through the beautiful countryside and offer wonderful views of the castle.
