LWL Industrial Museum TextilWerk Bocholt

The TextilWerk in Bocholt brings the history of textile culture in the Münsterland region impressively to life.

The LWL-Museum Textilwerk Bocholt tells the fascinating story of the textile industry in the Münsterland region. Two locations - the historic weaving mill on Uhlandstraße and the impressive spinning mill on Industriestraße - illustrate the entire manufacturing process from the cotton fibre to the finished fabric. In the weaving mill, rattling looms set the historical production process in motion, while the spinning mill is a modern museum building with interactive exhibitions. Exciting demonstrations, changing special exhibitions and hands-on activities make the museum a lively place of industrial culture. As part of the Route of Industrial Heritage, it combines the history of technology with social change and regional identity.

One museum, two locations

In the old Herding spinning mill, 20,000 spindles once turned. Today, the imposing brick building is a forum for textile culture. In the restored industrial monument, guests are introduced to the history and present of textiles. In addition, various special exhibitions provide information on modern and historical techniques as well as fashion design and international textile culture. At the very top of the spinning mill building is a glass roof café that is used for a variety of events. A tour of the spinning mill is only possible from March to October.

The second TextilWerk site is in the immediate vicinity. An old weaving mill with a large weaving hall. The smell of oil and work brings the past back to life and reminds us of the everyday life of thousands of men and women. The heart of the museum factory is the large weaving hall, where the old looms still rattle as they did 100 years ago. Even today, fabrics for towels and tablecloths are still produced here every day. This site of the textile factory also includes a fully furnished workers' house with a cultivated garden: this makes the meagre everyday life of the families come alive.
