History information

Like hardly any other manor house in the Münsterland region, the charming Buldern Castle is able to transport its viewers to a bygone era. The neo-classical mansion rises invitingly out of the greenery - but remains aloof because its walls now house a renowned boarding school. Since great importance is attached to the privacy of the students, a view is only possible across the Gräften - water ditches.

The foundation walls of the present building probably date from the end of the 16th century. Inside the building, this period has left traces in the basement of the castle. At that time, the noble von Buldern family, who had their medieval ancestral seat in the centre of the village, built a new manor house outside the village.

After several changes of ownership, Buldern Castle passed into the possession of the von Romberg family in the 18th century, who gave the castle its present appearance. The best-known bearer of the family name here is certainly Giesbert von Romberg, known as the "Tolle Bomberg", to whom Josef Winkler dedicated a unique novel. It is thanks to this dazzling aristocrat and his penchant for long forays into Münster's nightlife, including discomfort on the return journey in a carriage, that the tranquil village of Buldern has its own railway station.

In the 20th century, there were several conversions of the castle - here, among other things, as a dormitory for students at Münster University and as a branch of the Max Planck Society. From 1958, it was finally officially converted into a boarding school for boys and girls.
