Fortress/Castle

Rheda Castle developed from a medieval castle that was first mentioned in a document in 1170. After several changes of ownership, the later Rheda Castle came into the possession of the Bentheim-Tecklenburg princely family. At the end of the 17th century, the family expanded the castle into a princely residence.

Rheda Castle is still privately owned by the Bentheim-Tecklenburg princely family, which is related to almost all European royal families. The extensive palace garden is particularly worth seeing. It was rebuilt for the State Garden Show according to plans from the 19th century.

History information

Rheda Castle originally developed from a castle complex that was first mentioned in a document in 1170. It was the crusader Widukind von Rheda who built the castle. Until the 17th century, the castle changed hands several times until Rheda Castle was bequeathed to Count Otto von Tecklenburg in 1365 and became his secondary residence. From the 17th century onwards, the Bentheim-Tecklenburg princely family, which is still influential today, began to convert the castle into a count's or princely residence.

The Bentheim-Tecklenburg princes still own Rheda Castle and 4 other castles in the region. This means that there is very close contact with almost all the royal houses in Europe.
