Wild horse track Merfelder Bruch

A few kilometres west of the North Rhine-Westphalian town of Dülmen, a herd of wild horses has existed since the earliest times: the wild horses in the Merfelder Bruch, which were mentioned in a document as early as 1316.

Even today, the horses live as close to nature as possible and independently in a herd. If you want to see Europe's only wild horses live, you should definitely visit the wild horse track.

Tour information

A visit to the wild horse track in Dülmen is possible between March and November on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Guided tours of the wild horses are possible by appointment.

History information

The wild horses in Dülmen are an integral part of the town's history. A herd of wild horses has existed here since the earliest times. The wild horses of Dülmen were first mentioned in a document in 1316. Initially, their habitat consisted of an area of several thousand hectares. However, due to the increasing cultivation of the landscape, their habitat shrank more and more. The herd was pushed further and further back into the area of the Merfelder Bruch. In the middle of the 19th century, the Duke of Croÿ family left the wild horses a reserve of about 400 hectares in the nature reserve. Today, more than 400 Dülmen wild horses live on the wild horse track in the Merfelder Bruch. It is the largest wild horse track on the European continent.
