Fortress/Castle

The castle of the same name towers above the town of Bad Iburg. Iburg Castle with its former Benedictine abbey was the residence of the bishops of Osnabrück for more than seven centuries. Today, the mighty castle complex includes a castle museum and the convent garden.

History information

The bishops Benno I (1052-1067) and Benno II. (1068-1088) built the foundation stone of today's Iburg Castle on the ruins of an old Saxon refuge castle. The Iburg became the permanent residence of the prince-bishops of Osnabrück. At the same time, Benno II had a Benedictine monastery and St. Clement's Church built on the same hill.

In 1668 Sophie von der Pfalz, the wife of Ernst August I, gave birth to their daughter Sophie Charlotte on the Iburg. She became the first Prussian queen in 1701. After the Osnabrück prince-bishops had resided in Iburg for 600 years, Ernst August I built a new palace on the castle grounds, which became the seat of government in 1673.

Today, Iburg Castle houses the state police school, the district court and a castle museum, which can be visited by visitors.
