In the pilgrimage chapel of Telgte, visitors encounter the image of Our Lady of Sorrows. The chapel was built in 1654 - three years after the first pilgrimage to Telgte was approved. Every year, around 100,000 pilgrims come to the town to visit the famous poplar wood image. And the number keeps growing. Through numerous acknowledgements and honours by the Catholic Church, the pilgrimage chapel became increasingly famous. It received numerous gifts and was continuously expanded.

Construction and development

The construction of the pilgrimage chapel began in 1654, ordered by the Prince-Bishop of Münster, Christoph Bernhard von Galen. The chapel was consecrated on 2 July 1657. Various alterations took place throughout the period (1763: completion of the sacristy; 1854: removal of the partition between the chapel and the sacristy; subsequent vestry; subsequent renovation of the vestry on the north side of the chapel; 1959: fundamental renovation of the interior. interior - the previous neo-Gothic furnishings were removed). removed).

Arrival
Travelling by car:
Telgte can be reached by car via the A1 (Cologne - Bremen) or the A43 (Wuppertal - Münster). From Münster it is about twelve kilometres on the B51 towards Telgte.
Continue via Münstertor (keep straight on) and after about 500 metres turn into Mönkediek. After about 250 metres, turn left onto Bahnhofstraße.
Follow Bahnhofstraße to the pilgrimage chapel.
Travelling by bus and train:
Telgte is on the Münster - Rheda-Wiedenbrück railway line. From the railway station in Telgte it is about a five-minute walk to the pilgrimage chapel.
Lines R11 and R13 run from Münster main station to Telgte town centre. The journey takes about 30 minutes.
