The Roman

The Römer is the landmark in Lengerich's old town.

The "Römer" in the old town of Lengerich is a medieval churchyard gatehouse that grew to its present form through various extensions and additions. The origin of the name and the function of the gatehouse or "Römer" are still the subject of speculation today.

After the city acquired the Römer in 1851, it used the gatehouse in a variety of ways - for example as a town hall, prison, storage room, classroom or flat. Due to a reconstruction in 1979, there is currently a large room on the upper floor. Since then, it has been used as a conference room and as a guest room for the restaurant established in the attic in 1980, as well as for special occasions, such as civil weddings.
